  • Summer School English Course (June 4, 2012)

Menaul School’s summer English course is specially designed to address and augment the entry level language arts skills of academically diverse students.  Rhetorical, grammatical, and literary skills are graduated so that freshmen through senior level students can correct and develop particular skills necessary for clear and purposeful communication.

Accordingly, the course will follow the pattern of introducing (at the freshman level), reinforcing (at the sophomore and junior levels), and mastering (at the senior level) the following basic skills:  the active, grammatically correct sentence; the coherently unified and well-developed paragraph (with an unambiguous topic sentence and anecdotal and factual development); the expository and persuasive essay (with explicit thesis statement, logical development, and a summarizing conclusion emphasizing a particular concept); the MLA documented researched essay based on an issue of contemporary significance; and literary analysis (analyzing theme, character, conflict, figurative language, and diction).

Small group discussions, in-class tutorials, two exams (one cumulative grammar and one final essay exam), and at least four formal compositions are course requirements.
