Basketball coaching staff @ Menaul w/ Division I and Professional Basketball Experience
Posted February 21, 2012
At Menaul School we are truly fortunate to have three coaches who have played at the Division 1 college level and to two coaches who have played professional basketball in the US and around the world. This gives our student athletes a great opportunity to learn from truly exceptional coaches with phenomenal basketball experience.
For the last ten years Kelvin Scarborough (Coach K) has been Menaul School’s head boys’ basketball coach. Coach K had an outstanding career at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where he was one of the top twelve scorers in UNM history. He was UNM’s all time leader in steals and holds the school record for most assists in one game with 21 assists. After college Coach K played professionally in Mexico, Asia, Indonesia and Australia. This has given him and experience that he truly enjoys sharing with our students.
Joining Coach K this season is Brandon Mason as an assistant coach for the boy’s basketball program. Coach Mason attended the same elementary school as the Chicago Bulls Derek Rose and became one of the top basketball players in Chicago. Coach Mason played at New Mexico State for Coach Lou Henson. After college he played professionally in Ireland, Switzerland, Honduras, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Kuwait, Egypt and Lebanon. Coach Mason also played on the 2005-2006 NBADL Champion Albuquerque Thunderbirds team. Our athletes are extremely grateful for his experience as well.
Heading the girls’ team this year as Head Coach is Cindy McCants. Cindy was a high school All-American in California and played college basketball for two years at USC under then Head Coach Cheryl Miller. Coach McCants then transferred to New Mexico State where she finished her collegiate basketball career. Coach McCants has done a great job with our young and inexperienced team and look forward to watching their development.
All of these coaches playing experience has helped mold our athletes and allows them to know what experiences they might be able to have at the next level. Menaul School is grateful to have these individuals on our coaching staffs.

2011 UPper School Volleyball Season Wrap-up
Posted January 18, 2012
This past season for the Lady Panther volleyball team wrapped up on Tuesday, November 1st in a district playoff match in which the Lady Panthers lost a hard fought five set match. The season had many ups and downs for the Panthers that began in the two-a-day workouts before school started. This year’s team had a mixture of older and younger talent with four seniors at the top of the older talent and two eighth graders at the top of the younger talent. Although the Lady Panthers had four seniors, the team was relatively young and inexperienced in terms of playing together. Despite this, these ladies competed hard and were on the verge of advancing to the second round of districts. Coach Favors wishes to thank each and every one of these young ladies including their families for their tremendous sacrifices and work to make the season a huge success. Coach Favors also believes that this year is a step forward in the right direction to be able to achieve the goal of having Menaul be a consistent state qualifier and contender.

2011 Middle School Volleyball Season Wrap-up
Posted January 18, 2012
The middle school fielded two volleyball teams in the 2011 fall season, and the girls represented Menaul well on and off of the court. During the season, these young athletes practiced fundamental skills of volleyball while learning the importance of teamwork, commitment, and sportsmanship. Although they struggled throughout the season against some of the more seasoned teams, their skill level improved greatly and they maintained positive attitudes despite adversity.
Six young ladies competed at the 8th grade Varsity level, led by their Co-Captains Samaya Small and Aleya Burg. Samaya and Aleya led the team on offense, providing much needed experience and skill at the net. Seventh graders Dessie Lovato and Shaylee Montoya played tough defense, and Dessie assisted the team greatly with her consistent and impressive overhand serve. Star Lente and Anissa Romero, both first year athletes, greatly improved throughout the season on both offense and defense.
Seven girls competed at the 7th grade Junior Varsity level, led by Co-Captains Natalie Cook and Shay Skidmore. Natalie and Shay led the team with their consistent play on both sides of the ball. Tiara Arrington, Abi Klaurens, and Jessica Nunez played impressive defense throughout the season. Penny Kellywood and Espe Astorga worked hard to improve their skills and became tough competitors at the net.
